Outside 06:06
1. "Outside" I'm just going outside and may be some time I'm just going outside I won't change my mind If it's on the Earth you can rest assured we'll find it If it's hard to reach if we were blind we'd be crawling on our hands and knees There's nothing like the will to be the first one to see but don't let that thing know it's all you need I'm just going outside to see what the light's like to see if the view tonight makes it worthwhile To set out in the frozen wind with less than what we need don't we deserve a little luck to match temerity when all we ask is that we grasp what no one else can reach and make it known that we have shown how human hearts can beat a path across the cold and lifeless limits of what be But don't let that thing know it's beating for free I'm just going outside might sit by myself for a little while might consider the cold dark night some kind of prize Maybe I'll disappear into oblivious dignity there's nothing like the will to be the first one to see But don't let that thing know this could have been easy but don't let that thing know you're making history I'm just going outside and may be some time

2. "Carry Our Weight" Given the chance to do what you want serial murder without getting caught But outside it's summer you'd have to be insane to spend it all in the dark cutting up the parts of the people you've slain When all the votes are in and the book of folks is written they'll say, "These pictures are fake. They've done nothing but airbrush mistakes" And you're not alone in ceding defeat when everyone knows we've outlived all the great things and nothing we have is worth the space it takes up so how on Earth have you kept this pace without a crutch We file on towards a future that's fake and the gravity is great but we carry our weight Given the chance to do what you want relive a moment from this moment on but it's getting hotter and money is cheap all of us heroes living like thieves When all the votes are in and mediocrity wins they'll say, "These pictures are fake. They got caught up in dreams and mistakes" We file on towards a future that's fake and the gravity is great but we carry our weight

3. "Lift Your Head" Look they're kneeling in deference to some uninteresting face cause he caused some pointless mess to take They're lighting up the world around him they amplify his words and count them all for some little prick that's nothing to me Look they're building bigger stage for his uninspired routine cause he sold some ugly dream to the ugly They're lining up to pay him homage they're calling all their friends to come and see this little prick that's nothing to me I could easily take him down a bit but I'm too busy lying down in this trapped by the noise of all these choices left unfed you know that feeling that you get when you can't lift your head from your pillow? fuck that feeling.

4. "Can You Trust Your Brain" Can you trust your brain to get you through? Can you trust your brain to tell you the truth? All your thoughts are pure, your reason explains but can you trust your brain to look out for you? How'd it all get folded? How'd it get so dense? How suddenly we lose focus and struggle in our heads How'd it all get folded over on itself when you're in the light and you're sure it's right you can forget the dark corners of your mind Can you trust your brain when the whispers are true? Can you trust your brain to abandon those sad & doomed pursuits? All your thoughts are pure reason tells you everyday But can you trust your brain can you trust it? Cause we've all had brothers and friends Whose minds were their ends And I've been so angry So angry at them But how'd it all get folded over on itself? In their darkest times they couldn't trust their minds to even ask for help How'd it all get folded (Drum break) Can you trust your brain to get you through? Can you trust your brain to tell you the truth? All your thoughts are pure, your reason explains but can you trust your brain to look out for you?

5. "Safe" There's a wind outside the wall that could blow straight through it and take you away from me There's a pilot light in the basement, burning that could erupt so easily Your car is unsafe it could kill you a million ways leave you scattered in pieces on the interstate and the other night I saw you walk out the front door in the dark with your headphones on These machines that we breathe that we work inside and clean that we wall up between ourselves and everything they fight for your attention when you should be focused in and they will never keep you safe There's an operating force that's always out to get you It's always been and can't be seen but it won't lose sight of you There's the calculated fact that all of us are doomed we've always tried to disprove it but it's never not been true But I look at you and you're wearing hardly anything at all These machines that we breathe that we work inside and clean that we wall up between ourselves and everything they fight for your attention when you should be focused in and they will never keep you safe There's a catastrophic end that you are just beginning and the choices made from now till then are already all wrong already all wrong These machines that we breathe that we work inside and clean that we wall up between ourselves and everything they fight for your attention when you should be focused in and they will never keep you safe

6. "Some Instrument" Close your eyes, you little kids and open up your ears to this Some instrument singing unthought thoughts in the distance never loud enough You know it's only been 5,000 years since we gathered up our throng and drifted here This beat could be slower than the drift of a continent but we had no globe nor did we know what key it's in Just some instrument singing unthought thoughts in the distance never loud enough It's all we heard (a soft echo of some other thing) all we heard was the echo of some other thing that caught our mind and never let go reminding us we can't make that tone by the end though, it got us to seek another piece of the wreckage of everything we will never know

7. "Shout" (Getting Better) Just shout it's getting better It's a great era for a junk collector with lots of time for petty self reflection turns out vacant dreams are easy to sell there's nothing to celebrate, so celebrate yourself but it's all right as long as you mean it It's easier to analyze things than to do them It's a great era for us faceless critics faithful purists and shifty cynics we're above what you made because of what we know as if you're running out of second guesses of your own But it's all right because you do this for you and you can't just give it up or at least it seems like that should be true It's a great era for the wasted martyr fighting all these little selfish wars that he started he could face the gap between those without and those with or he could write another song that sounds like when we were kids But it's all right as long as he means it it's easier to analyze things than to build them Part of me thinks we've made it to one goal that we set where the problem is too much art that's too easy to get And we could spend all of our unsung lives buried down in those archives instead we keep inventing things again So you might as well open up your mouth and let it out none of us want to hear your silence or your doubts you might as well open up your mouth and let it out none of us want to hear your silence or your doubts Just shout it's getting better

8. "I Like Where I Live" On the top of the world where the light in the summer lasts forever There's a spot on the globe where the whole Earth is glued together I might go there some time see what it's like but it's more than likely I'll never I'll be here in my house with the blinds all drawn down trying not to spend all of my time counting down All the places I'll never go all the cities I'll never see how fast time is leaping away how much money that I would need Out west there's a spot off the coast where the sun goes to sleep but no one has ever succeeded in catching it beneath the sea I may try that sometime see if I can but if I never capture that dream you should know I was lucky to be born in Kentucky with the people who made me me And I like where I live If in fact this road only ends in defeat and all we lose are wasted expectations and greed and if it takes a shallow soul to succeed and we all have to wall in our loved ones or displace refugees Then I'll still have a place under the ground somewhere between the Ohio and Bardstown in a city of mixed blessings a poet boxer, and scenic gambling But I like where I live
